This is a filament spool holder for a 50mm internal diameter spool (standard Makerbot spool). It was designed to reduce the friction of the spool turning resulting in less failed prints and the stepper motors don’t have to work as hard. There are 2 printed parts and 2 bearings required for this model.

The 2 bearings are 8mm internal diameter and 22mm external diameter and 5mm width (any bearings up to 8mm wide will work with this design). They are standard skateboard wheel bearings so are a common size that can be picked up in all good bearing/hardware stores. The stand also suits bearings that are slightly wider (or minor differences in inner and outer diameter).

Recommended print settings:

The parts were printed using ABS (but any other non-flexible material would work) with 2 layers and a 10% linear infill. The parts are very robust and the spool holder is very stable, there are 4 holes in the underneath of the triangular stand if you want to put some rubber in there to stop the whole spool holder slipping on the table/bench surface. The insert that goes into the spool is tapered so you can semi-lock the spool onto the insert.
